Major Internet Failure Impacts Many Websites and Apps

A widespread web outage has disrupted dozens online platforms and applications globally, and users noting troubles accessing the internet after problems at the web hosting system.

The disrupted services comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-owned services such as its main retail site and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems reaching the HMRC site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users took to social media to complain their security devices were not working.

In the UK alone, notifications of disruptions on individual platforms reached the thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the issue originated in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a unit that provides essential internet infrastructure for a host of firms, who lease resources on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the eastern US of the America. The widespread consequence was seen to disrupt apps around the world, with the problem monitoring service indicating outages with the same sites in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors online failures, also reported a surge in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the outage started.
