The US Firm's Driverless Vehicles Planned for London Streets Next Year.
The US-based enterprise Waymo has revealed that its self-driving taxis will be available for use on London's roads starting next year.
UK Capital Named as First European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.
London will be established as the inaugural European city to host an autonomous taxi service, comparable with those already in use in San Francisco and several American cities employing Waymo's advanced platform.
Initial Testing Phase to Begin with Safety Drivers.
Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are now en route to London and will start driving on the city's public roads in the next few weeks with safety drivers in control.
The company – originally created as a spin-off from Google's autonomous vehicle initiative and belonging to the Alphabet family – explained it would scale up operations and work closely with the Department for Transport and the city's mobility organization to obtain the essential licenses to deliver completely driverless rides by 2026.
Expanding Presence in Self-Driving Transport In London.
Other organizations, such as Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have also revealed their own plans to test autonomous cabs in the capital next year.
This is in response to the UK authorities confirming it would fast-track rules allowing real-world tests to occur before laws enabling autonomous cars passes in full.
“I am thrilled that Waymo intends to launch their offerings to London next year, under our planned testing initiative,” said the official, the secretary.
“Strengthening the autonomous vehicle sector will improve available travel alternatives while also creating employment, capital, and prospects to the UK. Advanced investment like this will support our objective to be global pioneers in emerging tech and drive countrywide development.”
Full Introduction Expected After Automated Vehicles Act Comes into Force.
A broader deployment of autonomous taxis is anticipated in the UK after the new law is fully implemented in 2027.
Waymo's Current Connections in the UK and Internationally.
Waymo presently has links to the UK after launching its inaugural European research base in Oxford in 2019.
The company is also starting services in Tokyo using JLR electric vehicles, marking its sole additional current venture outside the US.
“Evidence confirms how to responsibly scale fully autonomous transport solutions, and we can’t wait to expand the advantages of our systems to the United Kingdom,” said Waymo's co-chief executive, noting that the system was “making roads safer and mobility more available”.
Proven History in the US.
Waymo introduced its driverless cabs in 2020 and currently states it has served over a vast number of passengers in the United States.
Regardless of some alarming events, Waymo asserted that evidence demonstrated that vehicles driven by people were involved in crashes that harmed people on foot at a much higher rate than its autonomous cars.
